MFA Exhibition, Georgia Museum of Art
The Master of Fine Arts Degree Candidates Exhibition for the 2016 class of the University of Georgia opens this Friday, from 6-8 pm, at the Georgia Museum of Art here in Athens, Georgia! Fifteen artists from the larger 2016 graduating class will show work in a range of media, from painting to ceramics to printmaking. The exhibition runs through May 1st.
My thesis work consists of large-scale paintings based on the conflicts between Finland and the Soviet Union during World War II, and the novel Unknown Soldier by Finnish war veteran Vainö Linna. In these paintings I revisit the 19th century genre of history painting, and look for a sense of the lingering past intruding into the present, history blurring into mythology, and the landscape as witness to all that has passed. I will also show the complete suite of these paintings in mid-May at one of the gallery spaces at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art.
