A mockingbird lived in the bush behind the parking lot of my apartment. I’d see him look at me from his perch on the outer branches, and hear him sing from deep inside the leaves. Mockingbirds are great imitators: they can mimic the calls of up to a hundred other birds, and human sounds as well. Mockingbird, I thought: I understand you. Like you, I can also blend in easily, mimic my surroundings and adapt. You live in this bush; I live in this building. We're neighbors.
