A tall water oak crashed across the back parking lot on a blue-sky day.
I kept drawing until dark, until the white lines of the parking lot merged into lines on the running track. The tree: a humming vibration, a personification of pain, a competitor, a shadow, a cheerleader. The track: relentless in its demand for speed, single-minded in its sharp perspective.
That’s the workout. Dread and adrenaline. Even before you wake up.
