These paintings come from memories, stories, dreams, and travels, including a three-month backpacking trip across West Africa in the fall of 2008. The fundamental concern in these paintings is the internal states of characters: their hopes and fears, their challenges and decisions, their journeys, and the way they relate to each other and to the landscapes around them. Water is a recurring symbol. For some characters, water is sensual and life-supporting; for others it is overwhelming and dangerous.
